Hideo Kojima talks Death Stranding theories, babies, and gameplay

Last year, Hideo Kojima revealed his incredibly mysterious new game, Death Stranding. Since then, we've gotten three in-engine trailers and little tidbits of information from Kojima himself. All of these trailers and tidbits have only given us more questions, Kojima is building an incredibly obtuse and ambitious game and until we see some gameplay, we probably won't begin to completely understand what the game is about.

Some have theorized that we'll be jumping through multiple dimensions and periods of time for some unknown reason but that's really all we have to go off of as the other pieces of information we have are so weird it's hard to make them fit into this oddly shaped puzzle.

Speaking to IGN, Kojima gave some more concrete information regarding the game's gameplay, lore, and more. While we're still left wondering, it's enough information for us to begin figuring out what the hell Death Stranding is.

Kojima's been stressing since the start the importance of life and maybe, more importantly, death, in Death Stranding since the game's reveal. Death plays a big role in this game, typically when you die it just restarts to the last checkpoint. Kojima plans to do things differently, when you die you'll go to a place that's between both life and death, like purgatory. Players will exit their physical body thanks to some ability that Sam (Norman Reedus' character) possess. You will explore the world in first person and will be able to gather items and other things.

“One of the themes of this game is life and death. So I want people to realize that when they die in the game, that isn’t the end.”

“At that point, you’re not dead or alive. It’s the equivalent of that screen that says ‘Continue?’ and a counter ticking down towards zero.”

When you want to return to the land of the living, players will enter their bodies and be placed back in the real world but not prior to your death. The game acknowledges that you were killed and the world moves on, almost as if you've been resurrected or reincarnated.

"So as you saw in the trailer, you saw the crater, and when you come back, it’s still there. Most games would’ve taken you back to before the crater was made. So depending on the player, you might have a lot of craters all over the place -- depends on each player."

“Death will never pull you out of the game,” Kojima firmly stated.

Kojima also talked about the mysterious rainfall seen in the recent trailer. It seems to speed up time on the objects it rains on, progressing the ages on humans and other living objects. This rain is not ordinary rain and is known as "Timefall".

“Most people in the game are aware of the rain -- and well, Norman is quite unique in this regard… I think I should stop there. I’m spilling the beans.”

With each trailer, everyone is dissecting every frame, every single thing that's placed in the trailer. Kojima does read/watch these theories and enjoys hearing what people are thinking, he even uses these theories to tease people in trailers. He even goes as far as to say there are new clues about every five seconds or so in the trailer.

“I think it’s fun, I really think it’s fun. It’s one of the unique things about games, that you can start having fun with people before you release the game. There are things I intentionally put there so that I can start this back and forth process with players because I think it’s fun for everyone.”

“You can find bits, clues and information, once every five seconds or so. And by people pointing to these discussions and analysis, and with each trailer, there are also connections created there.”

One theory Kojima went on to confirm is that the baby seen in the second trailer and the new trailer are the same child. The infant will be more than just a plot device, though.

“The baby relates to game mechanics as well as the story as a whole.”
